  Dwarkadhish temple history

there are numerous temples in India dedicated to lord Krishna, and among these is the Dwarkadhish temple, situated to dwarka,on the bank's of the gomti river.

This temple at dwarka is one of the char dham (a set of four pilgrimage sites in india) and it is also known by the name “jagat mandir”.

According to the belief'a temple was a first built by vajranabha, the great grandson of lord Krishna,at this place. And the place where this temple is built, was said to be the abode of lord Krishna.

There are two gates to enter this temple, one is the moksha dwar which is the north direction, and the other is the Swarg dwar which is in the South direction.

if you take a look at the idol installed at the temple, you could observe that is eyes are incomplete. and there is a legend behind it. in the fifteenth country, when there was a situation of war everywhere, the pandit his the idol in the well, named “savitri”to protect it.

a few years after this incident, lord Krishna came in the dream of the Brahmin and asked him to remove idol from inside the well after a specific time. the Brahmin could not keep patience after listening to what lord Krishna said, and without waiting for the correct time,he took that idol out of well.

But the eyes of that idol reminded incomplete. and the same idol is installed in the dwarkadhis temple in today. the flag that is waving on the top of temple is changed 5 times a day. a sun and moon are drawn on that flag.

the sun and the moon indicates that as long as they exist,so will the presence of lord Krishna. about 2 kilometres away from this temple, there is a temple of his wife Rukmini. and there is a legend behind the seperate temples and lord Krishna and Rukmini. Let's here is story.

once upon a time, lord Krishna and his consort rukmini went to meet sage durvasa. Rukmini gave a invitation to sage durvasa to visit their place, which he accepted one condition. the condition was that lord Krishna and Rukmini would pull the chariot in wich the would come to the place.

lord shri krishna and Rukmini accepted this condition without any hesitation. sage durvasa left for the place with lord Krishna and Rukmini. as per the condition, Shri Krishna and Rukmini started pulling the chariot in which sage durvasa was sitting.

After traveling for some distance, Rukmini got tired of pulling the chariot and she felt very thirsty. when Shri Krishna understood this, he made a hole in the ground with the thumb of his foot, from wich water of the Ganga river came out. and with that water, Rukmini quenched her thirsty.

but sage durvasa wasn't happy that Rukmini did not offer him the water first, before drinking. and due to his aggressive nature,he oursed Rukmini that she will separated from shri krishna.

And this the reson that the temple of Rukmini is at some distance from the temple of lord Krishna. there are also may things related to this temple. such as.

hearing Praises of lord shri krishna anywhere, Rukmini had decided to marry him. and she wrote a letter containing seven verses to lord shri krishna expressing her filling. this latter is daily in front of Rukmini Devi.

Janmashtami is the main festival celebrated in Dwarkadhish temple. apart from this, the marriage of lord shri krishna and Rukmini is also celebrated here as a big celebration. during which devotees visit this temple, and seek blessings of Dwarkadhish.
